Artist note
“It rained for nearly a month. It was late spring and thanks to the rain a small lake started to form to the side of our house. Within weeks birds flew down to settle on the surface of the water. Initially seagulls, then geese, and finally a few other ducks. It was then that this painting was made. The duck-brown unexpectedly jarring against the pink. Drips of yellow and duck egg blue like ‘water off a duck’s back’. A white and pale beige background like crisp feathers. Some paintings I name very quickly; what does it look like? ‘Waterfowl’ I thought. But this painting seemed too delicate for a word like ‘fowl’. And so I switched fowl for bird. I like ‘Waterbird’ better, I think the ducks would agree.”
