Artist note
“I spent a great deal of 2022 reading about the climate crisis. It has become a central concern in much of my work, and will no doubt be a recurring theme in years to come. When I painted this I had just finished reading The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells. The TL;DR is that things aren’t looking good for us. I balanced my heavy reading with poetry and I discovered a poem by Wallace Stevens titled A Postcard from the Volcano. And so I stole the title. The poem ends like this:
A dirty house in a gutted world,
A tatter of shadows peaked to white,
Smeared with the gold of the opulent sun.
